Stage 1: Scarborough to Malton

Starting (or finishing if you're coming the other way) the Beer Coaster overlooking the North Sea off England's East Coast, head along North Marine Road to the end of the beach before turning up Valley Road to the A64 out of Scarborough.

Follow the A64 south, coming off and through Crossgates to avoid the stretch of the A64 with no footpath, rejoin it just after Crossgates all the way through to Knapston where there's another slight detour through a village when there's no path along the road, and the same again at Scagglethorpe.

Shortly after Scagglethorpe, come off the A64 on the B1248 Scarborough Road into Malton itself.

This route is approximately 38.2km with a total climb of roughly 88m.
